25 May 44 BCE: To Atticus (at Rome) from Cicero (at Arpinum)
Cicero does not want to visit Lucius Caesar
[This is the first of two letters from May 25th.]
How I wish you could have helped Brutus the way you intended to! I shall send a letter to him accordingly. I have sent Tiro to Dolabella with instructions and a letter. Please summon him and write if there is anything you would like. But here, all of a sudden, Lucius Caesar asks me to visit him at Nemi, or to write to him with when I would like to visit him; he says Brutus would like him to see me. What a troublesome and unavoidable situation! So I think I shall make the journey, and go from there to Rome, unless I change my mind. I write this to you briefly, for there is nothing yet from Balbus. So I wait for you letter, to find out not just what has happened, but what will happen as well.
