6 or 7 November 44 BCE: To Atticus (at Rome) from Cicero (at Puteoli)
Cicero worries about missing important events in Rome
I have sent you a copy of Oppius’ letter, because it was very kind. About Ocella—while you are brooding and not replying to me at all, I have taken my own advice, and so I think I shall be in Rome on the 12th. I felt it was better for me to be there needlessly, if it wasn’t necessary, than to not be there if I needed to be; and at the same time, I am afraid of being prevented from returning. Antony could not be on his way. Although there are various rumours (many of which I think are true), still, nothing is certain. Whatever the truth is, I would rather be with you than apart from you and in suspense for the both of us. But I don’t need to tell you this—you feel the same.
It’s a funny situation about Varro’s Herakleidian work. Nothing has ever delighted me so much. But more of this and other more important matters when we meet.
