Early October 44 BCE: To Decimus Junius Brutus (in Cisalpine Gaul) from Cicero (at Rome)
Cicero promises to defend Decimus Brutus' reputation
Our dear Lupus reached Rome five days after leaving Mutina, and came to visit me the next morning; he explained your request to me very carefully, and he passed on your letter.
When you entrust your position in the state to me, I consider it as if you are simultaneously entrusting me with my own position, which by Hercules I do not hold dearer than yours. For this reason, I would be very grateful if you would trust that my counsel and devotion will be committed in every way to promoting your reputation.
