Mid July: To Lucius Plautius Plancus from Cicero (in Pompeii)
Forgive me for writing to you so frequently about the Buthrotians...
Forgive me for writing to you so frequently about the Buthrotians, when I have already written to you on the same subject in a great deal of detail. By Hercules, my Plancus, I am not doing this because I have too little faith in your generosity or our friendship. But when so much of Atticus’ finances (and now even his reputation) are staked on him showing that he can obtain that which Caesar approved, in decrees and replies that we witnessed and signed, I think I must again ask you, especially since you have complete control over the matter, to, I don’t say approve, but to approve eagerly and willingly that which the consuls have decreed in accordance with Caesar’s decree. I would be grateful for that above all else.
Although I hope that when you receive this letter, you will already have granted what we have petitioned in previous letters, still, I shall not stop asking until I get a report that you have done that which we eagerly anticipate. Then I trust that we shall write you a different sort of letter, thanking you for your remarkable kindness. If this comes about, I hope you will believe that it will not be Atticus, who has a very great deal at stake, so much as myself, no less troubled, who will be obliged to you.
